November 2022 ABI Student of the Month: Gloria Becerra-Cortes

Hi, everyone! My name is Gloria Becerra, and I am a third-year Animal Biology student with a minor in Education. I am from the Central Valley, where my love for agriculture and science began. My interest in large animal medicine has led me to become a resident at the UC Davis Swine Facility and the Vice President of the Young Cattlemen’s Association at UC Davis, among other things. I thoroughly enjoy every opportunity I get to work with animals and interact with my peers.

For my ABI specialization, I have chosen to study ovarian biology and folliculogenesis in Dr. Denicol’s laboratory. I am currently in the middle of completing my practicum project which focuses on activating primordial ovarian follicles in vitro. I feel so fortunate to have found such a welcoming and fascinating lab that aligns with my future career aspirations!

I love the ABI major because it gives students the opportunity to further study any realm of animal biology in which they are interested! Students are able to design a significant portion of their academic plan with the help of an advisor and mentor. There is so much you can do with an ABI degree! Post-graduation, I plan to attend veterinary school and track large animal medicine. ABI has truly helped me prepare for veterinary school by encouraging me to pursue my academic interests and explore research opportunities.
