Food and basic needs resources in and around Davis, California
Food is one of the most basic and important human needs, yet an increasing number of college students are going hungry as food insecurity gets worse. Food insecurity can not only lead to poor health, but can also have detrimental effects on a student’s academic, professional, and social life. Food insecurity can be brought on by various factors, including limited food access and financial difficulties.
Here in Davis, there is a variety of fresh and healthy foods in grocery stores, restaurants, and farmer’s markets. We do not have to travel over an hour to the closest supermarket or settle for greasy fast food because there is no way of getting a fresh and healthy meal. However, there may be other obstacles to access. From government programs to student-centered blog posts, many resources are available to support those facing food insecurity.
UC Davis students also have access to The Pantry as well as the Aggie Compass Basic Needs Center.
Mental Health + Wellness Resources
Let's face it - college is stressful! For any and every reason, from family to friends to academics, mental health is a serious concern for many students. UC Davis strives to cater to the needs of students who are in need of help - there are a number of resources available, mostly directed through the Student Health and Counseling Center. They offer a number of counseling services, such as one-on-one counseling, group counseling, and community referrals. They are also home to numerous programs aimed at improving student wellness, such as the Teaching Kitchen and Love Lab.
Academic Assistance
When times are rough and classes get tough there are endless places to get the academic help you need. Free drop-in tutoring is offered through the dormitories for some of the largest lower-division classes (such as chemistry, math, and writing), as well as through the Academic Assistance and Tutoring Center. Even if you don't have questions these places are great areas to study and have help available on-call.
For students taking calculus, there is a calculus room located at room 1317 in the Earth & Physical Sciences building where TAs float around (similarly to tutors) and help students with homework and course material.
And lastly - office hours! Your professors are there for you, and speaking with them one-on-one is always tremendously helpful in clearing up questions about course material, talking about common interests, and building a relationship with your instructor.
Financial Aid
The Financial Aid and Scholarships office deals with exactly what they're named after - financial aid and scholarships. Whether it is about financing study abroad, applying for scholarships, or applying for work study they should have most of the answers to your financial aid questions. Follow this link to their webpage to learn more about applying for scholarships and to find their common app for scholarships offered through UC Davis.
The Registrar's Office directly handles matters involving tuition, residence, registration, and more.
