January 2023 ABI Student of the Month: Genevieve "Genni" Shane

Hello! My name is Gennie Shane, and I am a fourth-year Animal Biology student with a Spanish minor. My interest in animal welfare started when sweet border collie, Kaia, got diagnosed with Addison's disease in 2017. After learning how to administer her cortisone shots, I learned more about veterinary medicine and found my way to UC Davis. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work on a ranch in Vacaville with large animals and I currently work at a small animal hospital as a kennel technician.

I applied to Davis as an Animal Biology major and have stuck with it ever since. Although filled with rigorous classes, I have had such a great experience in the major. I love the flexibility of the Restricted Electives, and I think my academic ability has been much improved as I've been pushed to take difficult courses. Additionally, because the major is relatively small, there are such great resources. I don't know many other majors that praise their major advising as much as I do. For the last few quarters, I have been working with the Hart Lab to collect data for my practicum project. We focus on the effects of spay/neuter on different joint disorders and cancers, with my project focusing on Rhodesian Ridgeback.

I will be graduating in June 2023, and although I am sad to leave Davis, I am excited to travel and work at an animal clinic full-time. I will be applying to vet school in the Fall of 2023 and spending my gap year working both locally and abroad.
